Philosophy Workshops for Children and Teenagers
I am delighted to offer philosophy workshops that invite young people to explore, reflect, and question in a supportive and inspiring environment. Through Philia’s workshops, children and teenagers gain invaluable skills in critical thinking, communication, and self-discovery that support them academically and personally.
Reconnecting with one of my favorite activities—running philosophy workshops for children—brings me great joy. My journey began during my time as a philosophy student at La Sorbonne, where I joined a team visiting schools to introduce philosophical ideas to primary students. Today, as part of the Philosophy for Children (P4C) movement and with the support of local schools here in Christchurch, I am excited to bring this experience to young learners.
These workshops are engaging and fun, but they also serve a deeper purpose. Research in the UK, including studies funded by the Education Endowment Foundation, has shown that children who engage in philosophical dialogue make substantial gains in literacy and numeracy. Teachers also report that these workshops foster confidence, respect for others’ perspectives, and improved self-expression—all of which help children thrive both in and out of the classroom.
For teenagers, philosophy workshops offer a space to delve into life’s big questions, build resilience, and explore their own values and identities. During a time in life when decisions, self-image, and the future can feel overwhelming, these workshops provide a grounding experience that helps teens develop:
- Critical Thinking and Problem-Solving Skills: Teens learn to examine issues from different angles, question assumptions, and find clarity in their thoughts and actions.
- Confidence in Communication: Through open dialogue, they gain the ability to express their ideas clearly and confidently, while also respecting diverse viewpoints.
- A Sense of Purpose and Self-Awareness: By exploring themes of meaning, purpose, and identity, teenagers reflect on what truly matters to them, helping to build a sense of direction and resilience for the future.
You can read about a philosophy workshop I facilitated in Ōtautahi this Spring on my blog.
Philosophy workshops allow young people to build skills that are both foundational and transformative. These sessions encourage curiosity, self-reflection, and empathy, qualities that empower them in their academic journey and personal growth. If you’re interested in learning more about the benefits of philosophy for young people, feel free to explore my blog or reach out directly.
Philosophy workshops can be held in schools or community settings.
